Captain America: The Winter Soldier review

Next up is the second Captain America movie: Captain America: The Winter Soldier. I really liked the first Captain America movie so i was really excited to see this one as well. Seeing how well Marvel was able to improve upon Thor i had high hopes and gladly it didn’t let me down.

Steve Rogers has kept working for the espionage agency S.I.E.L.D. under director Nick Fury, doing missions with a team, covering up mistakes and handling difficult situations. Simultaneously he is slowly getting adjusting to the new times, constantly learning new thing and details about the world. While he is excited for all the technology and advancements made in the past 50 years or so, he still clearly misses the past and spent a lot of time reminiscing the good old days. All is going well until Fury is attacked by a mysterious assassin and the whole S.I.E.L.D is discovered to be controlled by the evil nazi corporation Hydra. So Captain America has to step up again and face the Hydra and this time defeat them once and for all.

The movie does a great job keeping up with the quality of the first one. The effects are again great, the story engaging and the characters just keep on growing and evolving as the story unfolds. There were few big plot moments that were quite predictable, but the story still was able to keep me interested with new and exciting turn of events. There was also the plot hole that I realised while watching this one, that i do believe kinda has to be present in almost every standalone movie in the MCU after the Avengers movie. Since there are other superheroes present and the characters are aware of them, why did none of them show up when millions of people were in danger? For example there were mentions of Ironman who easily could have been used in the flight battles but instead he was kinda replaced by the budget version in the form of the Falcon.

Still the movie was really enjoyable to watch and it helped the character of Captain America move more into the hero realm, rather than the soft humane version of the first one. Overall a really solid movie.

  1. The "why don't they just call for other heroes to help" is something that comic book readers have wondered probably since the 60s. In the end the answer is either that other heroes are busy with some other adventures of their own, or the matter is very personal for the main characters of the film, or simply there isn't time for others to arrive.
