Music Video Analysis

Darude - Sandstorm

The video for "Sandstorm" features Darude with headphones viewing two armed security guards (a man and a woman) chasing another woman with a suitcase. Darude seems to appear at every place where the pursuers and the pursued go while running through the streets of Helsinki. After an intense chase, the woman with the case stumbles and is left vulnerable and so the guards are able of catch her. But then the woman pursuer betrays her partner, knocking him out. So the two women take the case and run hand in hand onto a boat where Darude himself is already waiting.

The genre of music is the classic early electronic music, more specifically trance, from the late 1900s and early 2000s. It can recognised by it’s use of electronic musical instruments, distinct peaks and drops within the track. The the lack of vocals which is typical for the genre.

Theres a good balance of both gender represented in the video: two men and two women. For most of the video men are viewed as superiors seen as one is unaffected and above all of the action and the other is leading the operation of pursuing the other woman. But at the end it is shown that all along the women were working together outsmarting and ultimately overpowering the man guard so rising above.

The music video overall doesn’t really have any world view put into it. It just represents early 2000s Helsinki and its narrow streets and alleyways. The message of the music video is maybe something like you can never trust anyone and that Darude is cool and always wins.
