With no words, no dialogue, no explaination the game Limbo form 2010 manages to convey such a deep and expressive story better than most other games. Right from the get-go you wake up as a lone kid in the middle of a dark misty forest with no name, no idea where you came from or any idea where you are supposed to go.
The uniqueness of Limbos story telling is that at first you don't know anything and the game intentionally doesn't give you any information regarding the story or the setting. Theres no cutscenes or tutorials you just need to go and discover all the gruesome ways to die, all the traps, monsters and the few other people that are in the forest who all try to kill you, flee from you or are dead. Slowly you get these small bits and pieces of the story as that you start to piece together. As the misty forests slowly turn into crumbling city environment you grow more and more interested and invested in the story.
The story evokes a lot of questions and doesn't really give straight answers to them. This leaves a lot to open interpretation. Thats why Limbo has been a subject of many internet theories and conspiracies. This way it breaks the convention of traditional linear game storytelling by letting the player fill in the gaps of the story themselves. It lets people make what ever they want of the story while still providing a lot of interesting content to it.
Thats why Limbo is one of my favourite games. Not only for the fun gameplay and clever level design, but also for the story. Even though you only spend 5 to 6 hours playing it, it leaves you thinking about what happened and why for much longer than that. It really encourages imagination in players and if you replay through it again you'll discover a lot of new meanings and subtle details every time. It makes you want to know more about everything and that’s why i think it is a great story.
