Media Diary 1

Kuvahaun tulos haulle thor poster
During the weekend I was bored and decided to watch a movie. After scrolling for a while through Netflix I stumbled upon the movie Thor from 2011. I have been meaning to watch more Marvel movies lately because I’ve been missing out on them for few yeas now and thought this would be a perfect time to do so. So here's my movie review of Thor.

Thor in it of itself is already a well established ancient god of thunder and almost everyone already knows more or less who he is and what he does. This presented Marvel with quite a challenge to portray him in a way that would make him more of a superhero than just some overpowered god. This resulted in a quite cliché but still effective story about a hero finding respect for their power and discovering themselves throughout the process.
The movie starts of with portraying Thor as an arrogant prick who doesn’t listen to anything or anyone and tends to get himself in trouble dragging everyone else with him. But when he is stripped of his power and banished from Asgard he becomes more and more sympathetic and relatable the more time he spends on earth. Marvel really manages to make this god feel like a human and so making the viewer root for him. By making him vulnerable it also adds a lot of suspense and risk to the fights that aren't really present at the beginning of the movie.
Marvel really wanted to make the world of Thor feel really grand and epic with all the cg they crammed in to the movie like the huge city of Asgard where most of the movie takes place and large hoards of enemies charging towards our heroes. But sadly after 8 years since the movies release those effects haven't aged so well and all they really do is take me out of the immersion. Asgard looks more like the digital universe of Tron and the fight scenes are most of the time just unchoreographed slapping between characters with a shaky camera. There were some up sides to all the computer graphics as well like the ending scene with its beautiful environment on the rainbow bridge and this time well thought out fight between Thor and Loki which really made the climax of the movie that much more satisfying.
All in all Thor was an ok movie. It followed many superhero movie clichés and was quite predictable at times, but maybe that's what made it so humane and relatable for viewers. And so Marvel succeeded again to secure another hero to their cinematic universes ever-growing lineup.

  1. I like the MCU as much as the next guy, but you are right: seeing this after 8 years it looks a little bit weird.

  2. I feel you on the wonky cgi effects. This happens in a lot of movies now. Like titanic for instance. I remember seeing that as a kid and being shocked by how real the people ping-ponging off of the boat as it folded. Now it looks like a PS3 pin ball game in those scenes. Wonder how far you will get into the MCU, seems like you'd have to dedicate a fair amount of time to catch up.

  3. I guess I don't have that good eye for the cgi because I've never had problem with that aspect of Thor. Interesting to hear your thoughts on the movie anyways. And I look forward to read about your thoughts on other movies as well!
